Linking attitudes and values to sustainable behaviour
Why do some people behave in a more sustainable manner than others? Are wealth levels or infrastructure availability, e.g. good bicycle paths, always the root cause? Or are there some deeper underlying attitudes and values concerning sustainable behaviour that lie at the base and may be subconsciously directing our biases towards the topic of sustainability. This short lecture seeks to address these questions by exploring several potential origins of sustainable behaviour. It is part of an ongoing study that analyses how shifts in attitudes and values shape our sustainable behaviour and perception by correlating datasets from two large international organizations: The Environmental Performance Index and the IMD’s World Competitiveness Yearbook. A short assignment pertaining to the lecture topic is to be delivered shortly after the lecture ends in order to receive the ECTS.
Who is Ken anyways...
Two-Day Workshop on Costume Design and Film Production
This workshop aims to assist students in understanding the influence and impact of fashion and costume in film. Over the course of two days, students will receive an introduction to the importance of the role of the costume designer within film, and how this role is instrumental in determining character, shaping narrative, and forming mise en scéne as part of the production of film, with a focus on James Bond. The students will be encouraged to think about: • How does their costume reflect the character? • What colours/fabrics would they use for this costume? • What was their inspiration behind this design? For a more detailed description of the course, see the attached abstract.
The course gives a basic introduction to Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). It consists of a lecture explaining basic theory and a demonstration of simple experiments. Particle Image Velocimetry is a non-intrusive, laser optical technique used for determination of the velocity distribution in fluids. The complexity of a system varies with the type of application, however, the basic principle of PIV stays the same: In PIV, the motion of a fluid (either gaseous or liquid) is visualized by illuminating a thin sheet of fluid containing reflective and neutrally buoyant tracer particles. A digital camera is positioned parallel to the illuminated sheet, capturing the movement of the particles. https://optolution.com/en/measuring-principles/piv-principle/
The course gives a basic introduction to Temperature Sensitive Paint (TSP). It consists of a lecture explaining basic theory and a demonstration of simple experiments. Surface temperature distributions and heat transfer on test bodies can be determined with the help of temperature sensitive paint (TSP), which is a well known method for two-dimensional temperature measurement. A specific measurement technique based on the use of TSP enables us to visualize for example the laminar-to-turbulent boundary-layer transition on wind tunnel models. Stationary measurements are possible in hypersonic, transonic and low-speed conditions alike. Measurements can also be performed on rapidly rotating propellers or rotors. Transient measurements at frequencies of up to 10 kilohertz are also possible in transonic flows.
Would you like to become more confident when presenting? Plus convince your audience with a clear structure? Even if in a university context it is often the content which counts most, there is more to a good presentation. In this workshop you will find out how to plan, structure and deliver an effective presentation. You will get to know five steps which guide you through the preparation of a presentation. Furthermore, we look at the presenter and their individual possibilities of achieving a desired effect. E.g. body language as well as rhetoric are among the means for establishing contact with your audience. We will also discuss presentation media, although this is no hands-on PowerPoint workshop. Instead, you can try things out in a mini-presentation activity and find answers to your questions about presenting.
In this workshop, you will experience a variety of learning strategies and techniques, from methods for structuring the learning material to learning progress checks. In this workshop we will deal with • understanding learning and memory • the chunking technique • techniques for sustainable learning • a reading technique • visualizing for better understanding • memory techniques • using breaks effectively. In combination with the course “Time Management…”, 0.5 CP can be acquired.
In this workshop you will be introduced to techniques from the areas of self and time management. You will have the opportunity to get to know and try out a range of methods and to create your own work plan. In this workshop we will deal with • goal setting • how to get and stay motivated • identifying your goals to have a direction • how to organize yourself and be productive • prioritizing tasks • how to use routines • overcoming procrastination. In combination with the course “Learning techniques…”, 0.5 CP can be acquired.
Patterns of Design Thinking
Patterns of Design Thinking Everybody is a designer. We all design all the time. However, what is it that we actually do when we design? What do we know about it? What can we know about it? While for some, designing is a complex myth and for others it is a simple method, this workshop offers a perspective that is between these two extremes. Through a series of lectures the topic of Design Thinking is introduced. Then an approach to studying successful designers is developed in order to extract their "Patterns of Design Thinking". With this in hand, participants can begin to improve their own design skills. Instead of taking over ready-made tools as is the case in many courses offered under this name, the participants of this workshop will be trained in toolmaking and enabled to create their own toolbox for Design Thinking. Due to the trans-disciplinary nature of the topic, the workshop is open to participants from all faculties and study programmes of the university.
