Linking attitudes and values to sustainable behaviour
Why do some people behave in a more sustainable manner than others? Are wealth levels or infrastructure availability, e.g. good bicycle paths, always the root cause? Or are there some deeper underlying attitudes and values concerning sustainable behaviour that lie at the base and may be subconsciously directing our biases towards the topic of sustainability. This short lecture seeks to address these questions by exploring several potential origins of sustainable behaviour. It is part of an ongoing study that analyses how shifts in attitudes and values shape our sustainable behaviour and perception by correlating datasets from two large international organizations: The Environmental Performance Index and the IMD’s World Competitiveness Yearbook. A short assignment pertaining to the lecture topic is to be delivered shortly after the lecture ends in order to receive the ECTS.
The course gives a basic introduction to Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). It consists of a lecture explaining basic theory and a demonstration of simple experiments. Particle Image Velocimetry is a non-intrusive, laser optical technique used for determination of the velocity distribution in fluids. The complexity of a system varies with the type of application, however, the basic principle of PIV stays the same: In PIV, the motion of a fluid (either gaseous or liquid) is visualized by illuminating a thin sheet of fluid containing reflective and neutrally buoyant tracer particles. A digital camera is positioned parallel to the illuminated sheet, capturing the movement of the particles. https://optolution.com/en/measuring-principles/piv-principle/
The course gives a basic introduction to Temperature Sensitive Paint (TSP). It consists of a lecture explaining basic theory and a demonstration of simple experiments. Surface temperature distributions and heat transfer on test bodies can be determined with the help of temperature sensitive paint (TSP), which is a well known method for two-dimensional temperature measurement. A specific measurement technique based on the use of TSP enables us to visualize for example the laminar-to-turbulent boundary-layer transition on wind tunnel models. Stationary measurements are possible in hypersonic, transonic and low-speed conditions alike. Measurements can also be performed on rapidly rotating propellers or rotors. Transient measurements at frequencies of up to 10 kilohertz are also possible in transonic flows.
